Tran Thanh Man Re-Elected With 100% Vote, Calls Result ‘A Bit Relieving’

Vietnam National Assembly Spokesman: Efficiency Is Itself A Kind Of Consensus

HANOI, Vietnam — Following his re-election as chairman of Vietnam’s National Assembly with 100% of present delegates voting in favour, Tran Thanh Man today addressed reporters and confirmed, with what observers described as a wry expression, that he was “deeply touched” but also “honestly a bit relieved.”

The vote, conducted at the opening session of the 16th National Assembly, returned Tran to a role he has held since the 15th Assembly and reaffirmed his position as one of the country’s senior leaders during a five-year term that will focus on consolidating state personnel and setting socio-economic plans.

The Reaction

“I want to thank the Assembly for the unanimous vote,” Tran told reporters in Hanoi, standing alongside other senior officials of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee. “I also want to acknowledge that, structurally, this was the result that was expected. I am pleased to confirm it.”

According to the office of the National Assembly, the vote was conducted under the body’s standard procedures, with all delegates present voting in favour and no abstentions.

Comparative Context

Asked by a foreign reporter whether the 100% vote total was, in any sense, statistically unusual, the National Assembly’s spokesperson said only that “in Vietnam, when the Party’s preferred candidate is presented to the National Assembly, the National Assembly considers carefully and then, on reflection, agrees.”

The spokesperson added that “we recognise that in some other parliamentary traditions, votes may take longer and produce a wider range of results, but in Vietnam we believe efficiency is, itself, a kind of consensus.”

Looking Ahead

Chairman Tran indicated that the 16th National Assembly’s priorities for the 2026 to 2031 period would include consolidation of state personnel, ratification of the upcoming five-year socio-economic plan, election of the country’s other top state and government leaders, and “ongoing implementation of national priorities.”

“We are entering a productive period,” Tran said. “I look forward to working with the entire Assembly, who, regardless of the vote total, are my colleagues, my comrades, and my friends.”

According to Vietnam News Agency, the Assembly’s session will continue this week with elections to the offices of the State President, Prime Minister, and other senior posts. The vote totals on those positions are expected to be similarly conclusive.
