History and Mission Statement

The Catchpenny Times Mission Statement

Making Hong Kong Laugh Since 26 January 1841

The Catchpenny Times is Hong Kong’s satirical journalism newspaper, proudly making readers laugh since 26 January 1841, when a British naval landing party raised the Union flag at Possession Point and immediately created enough politics, bureaucracy and historical argument to keep a newspaper busy for nearly two centuries.

Our mission is to report on Hong Kong, Asia and the wider world with wit, independence and a healthy suspicion of anyone standing behind a podium. We use satire, parody, irony and absurdity to expose political vanity, commercial nonsense, media hysteria, social pretension and the daily administrative miracles that occur whenever three officials attempt to move one traffic cone.

Catchpenny.asia recognises the important distinction between occupation and formal cession. Britain occupied Hong Kong Island in 1841, while the Treaty of Nanking formally ceded the island in 1842. We also recognise that history becomes much easier to understand once everyone involved has been given an unflattering nickname.

Our journalism aims to entertain without becoming empty, criticise without becoming tedious and inform readers without requiring them to complete a government form. We believe laughter is not an escape from serious events. It is often the clearest way to examine them.

From Hong Kong politics and Asian business to technology, culture, diplomacy, property, finance and the international competition to produce the least convincing official explanation, Catchpenny.asia publishes satire for readers who know that reality frequently arrives with its own punchline.

For generations, our purpose has remained unchanged: to comfort the bewildered, bewilder the comfortable and ensure that no empire, tycoon, bureaucrat, celebrity or self-appointed visionary becomes too important to be laughed at.

The Catchpenny Times: Hong Kong satire since 1841, when the flag went up and the excuses began.
